Bucking the Line

John Montague Smith, a modest bank teller from a sleepy hamlet, is thrust into exile when a spurious accusation of fiscal impropriety forces him to abandon his familiar streets. He boards a freight bound for the untamed West, where fate intertwines his path with Jerry, a wandering drifter of dubious repute. The duo, hungry for redemption, seek employment on a burgeoning railroad construction crew, only to be rebuffed by the obstinate foreman, Rand Barlow. A daring rescue of Corona Baldwin from a runaway handcar earns the gratitude of her father, Colonel Baldwin, who promptly secures both men positions on the line. As the rails snake across the rugged terrain, John uncovers a nefarious scheme: Barlow, colluding with the scheming Kinsey, deliberately stalls progress to sabotage Colonel Baldwin’s franchise ambitions. Elevated to foreman, John battles bureaucratic treachery, labor unrest, and physical peril, ultimately driving the inaugural train across a newly erected drawbridge. In the climactic showdown, Jerry thwarts Barlow’s sabotage, John saves Kinsey from a violent encounter, and the film closes with John cradling Corona amid triumphant victory.
