Summary
In the opulent, stifling chambers of 1920s high society, Gwynne Evans languishes under the weight of domestic tranquility, a condition she perceives as a velvet-lined prison. Her husband, Oliver, is a man of rigid expectations, envisioning his wife as a static ornament rather than a pulsating soul with theatrical ambitions. The narrative pivot occurs when Gwynne encounters Ava Shore, a celebrated stage actress whose physical form is an uncanny replication of her own. This ontological convergence sparks a daring stratagem: a clandestine exchange of identities. As Gwynne navigates the electric, precarious world of Broadway and Ava descends into the sedative rhythms of suburban wifedom, the film deconstructs the performative nature of gender and social status. The masquerade spirals into a labyrinth of romantic entanglement as each woman finds herself unexpectedly enamored with the other's partner, challenging the very foundations of matrimonial loyalty and personal essence. It is a sophisticated, satirical exploration of the masks we wear and the lives we covet, rendered through the flickering, expressive lens of silent-era mastery.
