Cinderella

In a soot-laden corner of a crumbling manor, a nameless drudge nicknamed Cinderella endures the rasp of cinders against her eyelids while her stepsisters—two gargoyles of vanity—flaunt silk like battle standards. A herald’s trumpet detonates across the duchy: the prince, fresh from slaughtering bears amid pine and blood-snow, will host a nocturnal carnival where every heartbeat is an invitation. Midnight’s witching hour, however, is leased by a lunar-lit benefactress who materializes from hearth-smoke, transmuting pumpkins into gilded carriages and vermin into liveried sentinels. At the masquerade, the prince’s gaze locks onto this phosphorescent stranger; violins swoon, chandeliers weep wax, and the ballroom becomes a terrarium of desire. Yet the spell is mortgaged to the second hand: at the twelfth chime Cinderella flees, leaving behind a slipper of Venetian glass—an anatomical key that will force every maidenly foot in the realm to confess its shape. The prince’s posse combs villages like taxonomists of longing, until the shoe sighs perfectly into the ash-silver arch of the only woman who ever vanished from his embrace.
