Crooked Streets
Summary
A meticulously crafted web of international subterfuge unravels amidst the bustling, enigmatic backdrop of 1920s Shanghai. Gail Ellis, ostensibly a demure secretary assisting Professor Silas Griswold and his wife on an antiquarian expedition, finds her innocent foray into the city's labyrinthine slums abruptly curtailed by a chilling abduction attempt orchestrated by her own driver. Her harrowing escape throws her into the path of drunken sailors, only to be rescued by the enigmatic Rupert O’Dare, a dashing young Englishman. This chance encounter swiftly peels back layers of deception, as O'Dare reveals his true colors as a British secret service operative, exposing the Griswolds' seemingly academic pursuit as a sophisticated front for opium smuggling concealed within their coveted antique vases. The narrative's final, deliciously ironic twist sees Gail reciprocate with her own startling confession: she, too, is a clandestine operative, a member of the United States Secret Service, leading to an inevitable, if clichéd, romantic entanglement born of shared peril and professional intrigue.
