David and Jonathan

Two adolescents—sun-bleached Jonathan and night-eyed David—wash up on a stretch of West-African littoral that looks like the first morning of the planet: copper dunes, mangrove cathedrals, a sky bruised by migratory birds. Their survival is not a montage of triumph but a slow erosion of civilized skin: salt ulcers, infected insect bites, the sour smell of hope fermenting into rivalry. One dusk, a missionary’s canoe drifts in bearing Rose—lips cracked, hair matted, eyes shining with the feral intelligence of someone who has already died once. From that instant the island becomes a laboratory of triangular desire: every shared coconut is a chess move, every campfire story a veiled declaration. David, the thinker, maps constellations onto her shoulderblades; Jonathan, the kinetic spark, teaches her to sprint across shale so her soles grow calloused like his. The plot spirals when a fever dream convinces Jonathan he has married her in the spirit-realm; waking, he demands the body to match the omen. David’s countermove is to baptize her in the surf, whispering verses from a half-remembered Apocrypha. When a slave-trader’s schooner appears, the boys must decide whether to signal for rescue or scuttle the vessel and remain sovereign of this Eden-turned-arena. The final reel is a single ten-minute shot: Rose alone on the beach at dawn, two sets of footprints leading into the tide, only one returning.
