Julien Sorel is a man born into the wrong class. The son of a carpenter, he possesses a sharp mind and a dangerous amount of ambition, which he uses to escape his provincial roots. This 1928 adaptation of Stendhal's 'The Red and the Black' follows Julien as he moves from being a tutor for the Mayor’s children to a secretary for a powerful Marquis in Paris. Along the way, he navigates two high-stakes affairs: one with the pious Madame de Rênal and another with the haughty Mathilde de la Mole. It is a story of social climbing, religious hypocrisy, and the inevitable crash that happens when a man tries to play a game where the rules are rigged against him.
