Die Prinzessin von Neutralien

A gilded cage of lace and spite, Die Prinzessin von Neutralien opens on Ethel Vandergolt—heiress to a dynasty stitched from railroads and champagne—whose refusals have become such exquisite public theatre that her discarded suitors incorporate, complete with ledgers and bylaws, to orchestrate the grandest of humiliations. They purchase the services of Dick Robinson, a third-rate matinée-idol whose greasepaint moustache is as counterfeit as his résumé, and charge him with the exquisite cruelty of making the untouchable heiress fall in love, only to drop her at the moment of surrender. The film’s chandeliers glitter like frozen waterfalls while Dick, rehearsing heartbreak in a mirror, discovers that the only authentic thing onstage is the tremor in his own throat. When Ethel—veiled in sarcasm and seed-pearls—returns his gaze, the conspiracy curdles: the hunter, pierced by his own arrow, flees into the night, leaving her amid a ballroom of whispered bets. In the final masquerade she feigns ruin, her silk slippers pacing a threadbare carpet as creditors hammer the doors; Dick, stripped of artifice, comes skidding back through the snow, no longer an actor but a penitent clutching the scrap of humanity she once tucked into his breast pocket.
