A gilded heiress, Teddy Simpson, weaponizes the telephone as both toy and scalpel: she dials strangers at dusk, trading satin-voiced innuendos for the adrenaline of anonymous desire. Each call is a paper boat set upon a moonlit gutter—ephemeral, pretty, doomed to soak and sink. Yet one night the game boomerangs: three of her voice-lovers materialize in the flesh, each clutching a diamond ring and the certainty that Teddy has pledged matrimony. While her oblivious fiancé, Rob Winslow, polishes champagne flutes for their impending nuptials, Teddy pirouettes through a burlesque of evasions—masquerading as a secretary, a manicurist, a French war-widow—trying to prune the hydra of expectations without drawing blood. The climax erupts in a seaside amusement pavilion where phonographs loop drunken tango tunes and the surf keeps time like a metronome of panic; there, Teddy must decide whether to auction her freedom to the highest bidder or torch the entire carnival of lies and walk barefoot into an honest, uncertain dawn.
