Summary
In the opulent, suffocating parlors of the American upper class, Robert Endicott finds himself paralyzed by the burgeoning liberation of his daughter, Mavis. Her flirtatious escapades at a domestic gala serve as the catalyst for an atavistic retreat; Endicott, seeking to purge the perceived decadence of the Jazz Age from her soul, orchestrates an expedition into the unforgiving majesty of the Canadian Northwest. This geographical shift from the manicured to the wild reaches a crescendo when Mavis is ensnared by the violent caprice of the river rapids. Grimshaw, her father’s stoic engineer, plunges into the torrent in a desperate bid for salvation. The pair is cast into a primordial, inaccessible basin—a natural amphitheater where the vestiges of high society are stripped away. Forced into a state of 'empty hands,' they must reconstruct existence from the raw elements, a process that inevitably transmutes their initial friction into a profound, elemental romance before the inevitable intrusion of the modern world facilitates their rescue.
