Summary
Set against the sun-drenched, azure backdrop of the Mediterranean, the narrative unfurls the precarious predicament of Grand Duke Ramon of Abacco, a sovereign whose charm far outstrips his fiscal solvency. The idyllic micro-state of Abacco teeters on the precipice of bankruptcy, with a predatory creditor—the sulfur tycoon Bekker—salivating at the prospect of foreclosing on the entire duchy to transform it into a sprawling industrial wasteland. Ramon’s salvation seemingly resides in a matrimonial alliance with the Grand Duchess Olga of Russia, yet this hope is jeopardized when a clandestine missive confirming her intent is purloined by a cabal of opportunistic revolutionaries and a shadowy financier. Enter Philipp Collins, an intrepid adventurer and master of improvisation, who intercedes in this labyrinthine web of geopolitical maneuvering and personal desperation. What follows is a kinetic odyssey through the serpentine alleys of the Riviera and the opulent corridors of power, as Collins navigates a gauntlet of kidnappings, mistaken identities, and high-stakes espionage to restore the Duke’s fortune and the sanctity of his borders. The plot is a sophisticated clockwork of Weimar-era whimsy, blending the elegance of high society with the frantic desperation of the dispossessed, ultimately interrogating the fragile intersection of aristocratic tradition and the burgeoning ruthlessness of modern capitalism.
