It's a Great Life
Summary
Set within the cloistered, hierarchical confines of an elite boys' academy, the narrative unfolds as a whimsical yet pointed exploration of mercantile ambition and adolescent ingenuity. When the protagonist, Stoddard, and his resourceful companion—affectionately yet problematically dubbed 'The Wop'—discover a pearl of significant luster within a common oyster at a local eatery, their adolescent world is upended by the fever dream of sudden wealth. This discovery instigates a series of convoluted maneuvers as the duo attempts to leverage their find into a burgeoning empire, navigating the treacherous waters of schoolboy ethics and the burgeoning consumerist ethos of the early 20th century. The plot oscillates between the lighthearted camaraderie of youth and a more sophisticated critique of the American dream, as the boys' pursuit of fortune reveals the fragility of social standing and the unpredictable nature of providence in a world recovering from the Great War.
