Summary
In the grimy, bustling tableau of early 20th-century New York's Lower East Side, the formidable matriarch Ma Birdsong anchors her existence to the welfare of her progeny, Jimmy and Essie. A narrative of burgeoning modernity and maternal anxiety unfolds as Essie, propelled by a nascent desire for self-determination, defies her mother's fervent admonitions to secure employment as a theater usher. This seemingly innocuous step into the vibrant, yet morally ambiguous, public sphere precipitates her entanglement with Joe Ullman, a figure whose charm belies a distinctly dubious character, thereby threatening the fragile equilibrium of the Birdsong household and exposing Essie to the perilous undercurrents of urban independence.
