Summary
A bastard prince, reared on Brooklyn’s cobblestones, returns to the Fatherland as a living mirror: his face the Kaiser's dynastic death-sentence. Swapping salt-air America for the incense-and-iron stink of Wilhelmshof palaces, he glides through chandeliered corridors wearing the Crown Prince’s skin—every twitch of moustache a forgery, every heel-click a countdown. Around him, the Reich staggers under war’s arterial spray; within him, the ticking of two heartbeats—one loyal to star-spangled liberty, the other shackled to Hohenzollern blood—grows deafening. Courtiers, dazzled by the doppelgänger, spill secrets like wine; princesses offer themselves as collateral; and in candlelit confessionals the Kaiser’s own chaplain murmurs apocalypse. Espionage becomes opera: a nocturnal gavotte of poisoned brandy, duplicitous love notes, balcony shadows sharp as sabres. Yet the deeper our spy burrows into the palace’s baroque marrow, the more the masquerade gnaws back at him—until he stands before the gilded mirror unable to discern which silhouette deserves the bullet.
