Summary
Set against the rhythmic, creaking backdrop of a traditional watermill, Lau Lauritzen’s 1924 masterwork weaves a tapestry of rural obsession and class-based malice. The narrative pivots on a classic yet elevated love triangle: Grethe, the radiant daughter of the local miller, finds herself the object of a predatory fixation by Per Persson, a man whose wealth is matched only by his profound narcissism. While Grethe’s affections are firmly tethered to the humble miller’s apprentice, Persson operates under the delusion that gold can bypass the soul’s autonomy. When his overtures are rebuffed, the suitor descends into a series of increasingly desperate and nefarious machinations designed to eliminate his romantic rival. The arrival of the iconic vagabonds Pat and Patachon shifts the film’s tonal equilibrium; initially hired as laborers, they become the unlikely guardians of the mill’s moral center. As the miller’s widow faces the specter of financial insolvency, Patachon’s well-intentioned but chaotic altruism inadvertently spirals into a criminal conspiracy of arson, forcing the duo to navigate a precarious path between bumbling comedy and high-stakes survival.
Synopsis
A love triangle is building up to a drama in and around the old mill. The wealthy and self-absorbed Per Persson is in love with the miller's beautiful daughter, Grethe, whose heart, however, belongs to the miller's apprentice. To Persson's great frustration, Grethe would never dream of choosing wealth over love, so Persson instead - and unsuccessfully - tries to get rid of his rival in all sorts of nefarious ways. As a result of various complications, Pat and Patachon are employed as helping hands at the old mill and become good friends with the miller's widow, Grethe and the apprentice. The miller's widow is in financial trouble, and Patachon's eagerness to help soon gets him and Pat embroiled in an arson case.
