Leon Drey
Summary
In the gas-lit labyrinth of a nameless Baltic port, Leon Drey—antique-book restorer, part-time chess hustler, full-time ghost to his own past—inherits a water-stained folio that bleeds seawater when touched. The pages recount a vanished cartographer’s voyage to an island that never existed, yet every midnight the town’s fog-cloaked quays rearrange themselves to match the phantom coast. Nathalie Lissenko’s Dr. Valeska Arkady, astronomer-turned-coroner, maps star-motions on the victims’ retinas, convinced the town is tilting off the celestial grid. Nikolai Radin plays Commissioner Straut, a man whose moustache hides scars dealt by a czarist firing squad he somehow survived without a single witness. Arsenii Bibikov’s Linnaeus, a child-criminal with porcelain teeth, trades in secrets and hummingbird eggs, ferrying coded lullabies between rival cabals. Nadezhda Nelskaya is Ilsa Drey, Leon’s supposedly dead wife, now a nightclub chanteuse who sings only in frequencies that shatter glass and memory. Emma Bauer’s Sister Vesta keeps a convent infirmary where X-rays reveal guns hidden inside ribcages, while Boris Borisov’s one-armed lighthouse keeper extinguishes the beacon whenever the ferry carries sinners. V. Porten’s taxidermist stuffs mermaids with condemned poems; Petr Lopukhin’s magistrate stages trials for birds. Raisa Reizen, Tatyana Bakh, Mariya Khalatova drift through opium parlors, anarchist printshops, and an underground carnival where masks are sewn from the faces of the wearers’ future selves. As Leon deciphers the folio’s copperplate, ink morphes into live eels; each translation births a new corpse arranged like a constellation. When the final page turns to mirror, Leon confronts his own reflection wearing Ilsa’s dress, whispering that every cartographer is a traitor to the territory. The island, it seems, is the sum of all betrayals, and the only escape is to burn the map while inside it.
