Summary
A gullible heiress, drunk on incense and moonlit hokum, mistakes the silk-robed charlatan Raymond Moreland for a maharishi of desire; when the veil lifts she bolts from the elopement, trading hashish hallucinations for the saner contract of marriage to her steadfast guardian John Harland. Years later the guru-turned-blackmailer slithers back, waving her youthful billets-doux like kerosene-soaked torches. One midnight scuffle, a revolver’s bark, and Moreland lies cold while Harland—now the city’s top prosecutor—inherits the very case that could hang his wife. What follows is a fevered paper-chase through drawing rooms, opium parlors, and courthouse corridors as Eileen races to incinerate every last scarlet syllable before her husband’s duty collides with her secret.

She marries her guardian, John Harland, and is happy until Moreland returns and seeks to reopen the affair under threat of exposure. Moreland is killed, and her husband, as District Attorney, takes charge of the case.
