Summary
From the rugged, unvarnished expanses of a Western mining town emerges Maida Madison, a civil engineer whose pragmatic brilliance and forthright spirit capture the affections of millionaire Gordon Appleby. Their ensuing marriage, a union of raw frontier vigor and industrial wealth, transports Maida to the staid, patrician enclaves of Philadelphia, where she finds herself an unwelcome anomaly amidst Gordon’s entrenched, snobbish kin. Foremost among her detractors is Mortimer, Gordon’s elder brother, a bastion of highbrow decorum whose sensibilities are profoundly affronted by Maida’s unpretentious demeanor. He orchestrates a relentless campaign to sever the marital bond, viewing Maida as an unsuitable stain on the family escutcheon. Concurrently, Maida uncovers a clandestine dalliance involving Gordon’s sister, Eunice, whose husband is deployed overseas, and the notorious playboy Rupert Fenton. A sense of duty compels Maida to intervene when she overhears Eunice’s perilous plan to abscond to Egypt with Rupert during a social gathering. Later that evening, as Maida pursues Eunice to Rupert's apartment in a desperate attempt to avert disaster, she is observed by the ever-vigilant Mortimer. This sighting becomes the fulcrum of his machinations, almost successfully painting Maida as unfaithful to Gordon. Despite the precariousness of her own reputation, Maida stoically refuses to divulge her true purpose, opting to safeguard Eunice’s honor. Overwhelmed by shame and gratitude, Eunice ultimately confesses her transgression, a revelation that not only exonerates Maida but also shatters the Applebys’ aristocratic prejudices, finally embracing their spirited Western daughter-in-law into the heart of their once-impenetrable family.
Synopsis
In a Western mining town, millionaire Gordon Appleby meets Maida Madison, a civil engineer, and proposes. The two marry and return to Philadelphia, where they are coldly received by Gordon's snobbish family. Gordon's elder brother Mortimer's highbrow sensibilities are particularly offended by Maida's breezy manner, and he determines to break up the marriage. Meanwhile, Maida learns that Gordon's sister Eunice, whose husband is a lieutenant overseas, has formed an attachment to playboy Rupert Fenton. Maida decides to save Eunice when, at a party, she overhears her planning to elope with Rupert to Egypt. Late that evening, Maida follows Eunice to Rupert's apartment, where she is seen by Mortimer, who almost succeeds in convincing Gordon of her unfaithfulness. Maida refuses to explain her presence at Rupert's in order to shield Eunice, who, ashamed, confesses her guilt. Filled with gratitude, the Applebys accept their Western daughter-in-law into the family.
