Memory Lane

In Memory Lane, director John M. Stahl crafts a delicate, almost intrusive study of romantic indecision and the ghosts of past affections. Mary, played with a hauntingly expressive vulnerability by Eleanor Boardman, finds herself at the altar about to marry Jimmie, a man who offers stability and a respectable future. However, the shadow of Joe, an old flame, looms large over the ceremony. The film eschews the typical high-octane drama of the silent era in favor of a simmering domestic tension that boils over when Joe unexpectedly appears during the couple's honeymoon.
