Summary
In this 1926 masterclass of social anxiety and domestic chaos, Charley Chase portrays a son caught in the crosshairs of his mother’s upward mobility. Having secured a wealthy husband by conveniently omitting the existence of her grown son, the mother (Virginia Pearson) is thrown into a panic when her offspring arrives for a surprise visit. To protect her social standing and her marriage, she forces her son into the role of the household's new valet. The film transforms a simple family reunion into a high-stakes masquerade where every domestic chore becomes a potential exposure. As the husband (Anders Randolf) begins to suspect that his new servant is far too intimate with his wife, a parallel subplot involving a suspiciously intrusive maid (Martha Sleeper) turns the household into a labyrinth of nocturnal misunderstandings. It is a comedy of manners stripped of its politeness, replaced by the frantic energy of a man trying to be a servant to a father-in-law who doesn't know he exists.
