Deep in the unforgiving northern wilderness, Saima, the resilient daughter of the Niva farmstead, discovers a man clinging to life in the churning rapids of a local river. He is a German Lieutenant, a man whose escape from the brutal Murman railway labor camp has left him physically shattered but spiritually defiant. As Saima hides him within the domestic safety of her home, the film shifts from a survivalist thriller into a tense domestic drama. The Lieutenant’s presence is a ticking clock; his recovery is shadowed by the encroaching reach of the authorities who are scouring the landscape for fugitives. The narrative explores the collision of individual compassion and the cold mechanics of wartime law, set against a landscape that is as much a character as the fugitives themselves.
