Summary
In an audacious narrative born from the journalistic world's penchant for fabrication, two enterprising newspapermen find themselves in a quandary of their own making: their wildly successful book, penned under the guise of a fictitious author, demands a flesh-and-blood counterpart as its popularity explodes. Into this precarious charade steps Jack Holt, an ailing literary agent whose professional acumen is matched only by his declining health, tasked with conjuring a living persona for the phantom writer. Accompanying him is an unlikely associate, a safe-cracking confidante whose skills prove unexpectedly pertinent. As Holt endeavors to navigate this intricate deception, fate intercedes, entangling him in a burgeoning romance with the Governor's daughter. This burgeoning affection, however, blossoms against a backdrop of sinister political machinations, as the malevolent Drisco orchestrates a scheme to compromise the Governor, strategically planting a substantial sum of $20,000 within the executive's personal safe, poised to unleash a scandal that threatens to unravel both personal and public lives.
