Summary
In the wake of her father's passing, Taisie Lockhart stands as the sole guardian of a sprawling, dust-choked Texan empire, a legacy of cattle and land that is as burdensome as it is majestic. Facing the encroaching specter of financial ruin in a post-Civil War landscape, she conceives a gambit of staggering proportions: a thousand-mile exodus across the unforgiving meridian to the railhead at Abilene, Kansas. This is no mere commercial endeavor but a desperate pilgrimage through a wilderness teeming with elemental threats. However, the true peril lies not in the environment but in the shadow of Clinton Worth, a perfidious State Treasurer whose avarice knows no bounds. Worth orchestrates a campaign of systemic sabotage, aiming to dismantle the cattle drive through violence and chicanery, thereby seizing the Lockhart holdings for his own enrichment. The narrative unfolds as a visceral struggle between the pioneering spirit of a woman reclaiming her destiny and the ossified corruption of a political machine determined to devour the frontier's soul.
