Biography
Born within earshot of Broadway on 5 October 1874, George Irving grew up with Manhattan’s footlights in his blood. By the 1910s he had traded the city’s frantic street grids for California back-lots, slipping easily between greasepaint and megaphone: he barked orders on The Landloper in 1918, steered the tempest of Man Power in 1927, and still found time to play flustered authority opposite a leopard in 1938’s Bringing Up Baby. Off-screen he shared a quiet life with Mary Katherine Gilman, his wife and anchor through four decades of studio upheavals. Irving’s final curtain fell in Hollywood on 11 September 1961, closing a career that had helped coax the flicker of nickelodeons into the roar of the Golden Age.
