Summary
In a searing indictment of early 20th-century marital complacency and the insidious allure of superficiality, "Old Wives for New" unfolds a stark domestic drama. Charles Murdock, a man enmeshed in a union with his indolent and corpulent wife, finds his affections irrevocably drawn to the luminous Juliet Raeburn. This burgeoning liaison, however, spirals into a maelstrom of public scandal when Juliet becomes entangled in a murder investigation, her name tarnished by grave charges. Murdock, driven by an impassioned conviction of her innocence and perhaps a profound yearning for a different life, orchestrates her meticulous exoneration. The ensuing societal upheaval ultimately culminates in the dissolution of his stale marriage – a bold challenge to prevailing moral strictures – and a defiant, if controversial, remarriage to Juliet, thereby dissecting the often-unspoken desires, moral compromises, and the very definition of 'desirable' partnership that underpin societal expectations of fidelity and domestic bliss.
Synopsis
Charles Murdock neglects his fat and lazy wife in favor of Juliet Raeburn, but when Juliet's name is involved in murder, he manages to clear her of any charge. After his divorce, Charles marries Juliet.
