Summary
Ida Compton, a wife tethered to the prosaic existence of a Montana prospector, finds her domestic life stifling. An invitation from the cosmopolitan Ora Blake, a wealthy widow, offers a tempting escape: a grand tour of Europe. Amidst the continent's opulent socialites, Ida initially thrives, indulging in a life of ease and glamour, only to discover a profound yearning for the simpler, authentic affection of her husband, Gregory. Unbeknownst to her, back in Butte, Gregory strikes gold. His celebratory telegram, meant to reunite them, becomes a tool of malicious intent when Ora, harboring a secret passion for Gregory, intercepts and manipulates Ida's reply. She crafts a response demanding a share of Gregory's newfound wealth, painting Ida as avaricious. The deception unravels upon their return to Montana, leading to a heated confrontation between the women at the mine. Simultaneously, a heartbroken and disillusioned Gregory, unaware of their presence or Ora's treachery, prepares to destroy his discovery, believing his love lost to greed.
Synopsis
Ida is married to small-time Montana prospector Gregory Compton. She's bored and lonely, so a friend, wealthy widow and woman of the world Ora Blake, easily gets her to share a trip to Europe. There, Ida lives the high life amid the continent's rich and carefree, but soon grows weary of it, wishing she were home again with her true love. Back in Butte, Gregory has hit a gold strike and telegraphs Ida of his luck. Ora however, with a secret love for Gregory, sabotages Ida's response by rewriting the return cable to indicate Ida will return, but only for a share in the gold. When the travelers return to Montana, Ida has found out about what backstabbing Ora has done, and fight it out at the mine, but unaware of their presence, the now-disillusioned Gregory intends on blowing up the mine at the same time.
