Princess Romanoff
Summary
Snow-mantled Neva embankments shimmer like hammered pewter beneath a moon of molten glass as Princess Fedora Romanoff—veiled in sable, her eyes two violet bruises—steps from her gilded sleigh into a palace perfumed by white lilacs and imminent doom. Betrothed to the flaxen-haired officer Vladimir Boroff, she glides through marble corridors where gypsy violins bleed pathos into champagne flutes; yet midnight’s hush is cleaved by a stiletto’s flash, a crimson aster blooming on the breast of her groom-to-be. In the hush that follows, the city’s bronze horses seem to rear in silent accusation while icicles weep like chandeliers of grief. The widowed aristocrat sheds her silk soigne like a snake its skin, swathing herself in funereal velvet, and boards a transatlantic leviathan whose engines throb like an iron heart bound for Manhattan’s electric Babylon. There, amid the nickel glare of Coney Island and the polyglot clamor of Lower East Side warrens, she stalks shadows—her grief calcified into obsidian resolve—through tenement rooftops slick with rain, through vaudeville halls where laughter crackles like faulty wiring, through Wall Street temples where ticker-tape serpents coil around marble columns. Each clue is a shard of memory, each suspect a distorted mirror: anarchist orator, Tammany fixer, monocled impresario, consumptive violinist. When the assassin’s identity detonates like a cannonade of black snow, Fedora confronts him in a Hudson-side warehouse where moonlight drips through broken skylights onto crates stenciled with Cyrillic glyphs; the reckoning is both execution and self-immolation, leaving her alone on a pier at dawn, smoke fusing with river fog, love and vengeance annihilated in the same crucible.
