Summary
In the desolate, wind-scoured expanses of the American frontier, Jim McKee and his companion Buck find themselves driven by a desperate altruism to intercept a stagecoach. Their objective is not personal enrichment, but the financial salvation of Buck's young daughter. The heist, however, dissolves into a chaotic skirmish with the law, leaving Buck mortally wounded and Jim as the sole custodian of a heavy secret and a helpless infant. Fleeing the reach of the gallows, McKee assumes a paternal mantle, raising the girl in a secluded sanctuary of manufactured normalcy. Fifteen years of precarious peace pass, during which the girl blossoms into womanhood, oblivious to the crimson stains on her guardian’s past. Yet, the inexorable demands of her future and the encroaching pressures of a changing world force McKee’s hand. To maintain the illusion of her respectability and provide the dowry of her dreams, the aging outlaw is compelled to resurrect his dormant demons, descending once more into the abyss of banditry for one final, tragic act of devotion.
