William Canfield Jr., a pampered Boston collegian, returns to the Mississippi to reunite with a father he hasn't seen since childhood. His father, 'Steamboat Bill,' is a rough-hewn river captain locked in a bitter rivalry with a wealthy businessman who owns a much sleeker, more modern vessel. Expecting a successor in his own image, Bill is horrified to find his son is an effete 'dandy' carrying a ukulele and sporting a pencil mustache. The film follows their awkward attempts to bond and the son’s clumsy efforts to prove his worth, all leading up to a massive hurricane that levels the town and forces Junior to become an unlikely hero.
Synopsis
The effete son of a cantankerous riverboat captain comes to join his father's crew.
