The Alster Case
Summary
In a clandestine testamentary gesture, the affluent, unmarried Cornelia Alster surreptitiously designates George Swan, a financially struggling legal clerk, as the sole executor of her considerable estate. This pivotal decision precedes a fateful evening where, following an unexpected early return from the theatre, Miss Alster stumbles upon a disconcerting domestic tableau. She mistakenly perceives her two wards, Beatrice and Linda, to be engaged in illicit romantic entanglements. The reality, however, is a more complex web of duplicity and desperation: Linda is embroiled in a tense confrontation with Keith, the household butler, who manipulates her with compromising knowledge for monetary gain, while Beatrice is merely hosting her paramour, the inventive Allen Longstreet. Retreating to her chambers, Miss Alster, consumed by a resolve to uncover the identities of these nocturnal visitors, finds her vigilance tragically curtailed. The ensuing dawn reveals her lifeless form, a victim of murder. The esteemed detective Trask is swiftly engaged, embarking on a meticulous investigation that unearths five crucial clues, culminating in a final, irrefutable piece of evidence. This leads to a profoundly unexpected revelation, unraveling a baffling narrative and exposing the perpetrator from within the very confines of the cast, challenging the audience to discern the true culprit amidst a circle of intimate betrayal.
