The Cathedral Builder

Stone by stone, a solitary stonemason named Tomáš ascends from the mold of a 14th-century Bohemian village toward the heavens, convinced that only a vertical city of faith can ransom his blood-guilt after a wartime atrocity. Over four decades he barters youth, marriage, and sanity to raise a Gothic cathedral whose spires will, he believes, outrun the plague and the conscience alike. Alongside him, Klára—once a miller’s daughter, later the village’s reluctant matriarch—mutates from adored bride to spectral custodian of the worksite, her face calcifying like the weather-worn saints she polishes each dawn. Their only child, Mikuláš, apprenticed to his father’s chisel yet intoxicated by the Reformation’s whispers, ultimately betrays the dynastic dream by carving clandestine Lutheran runes into the ribs of the choir. Meanwhile, the parish priest, Father Řehoř, funnels indulgence money into the building fund while negotiating with a Hussite mob that would sooner burn marble than worship it. When the Hussite lightning finally splits the nave, Tomáš must decide whether to extinguish the flames with the same hands that laid every block, or let the fire finish the absolution he both craves and dreads.
