The College Boob

Aloysius "Ally" Appleby, a strapping but naive youth from a pastoral setting, arrives at Baldwin College burdened by a solemn vow to his Aunt Polly and Uncle Lish: no sports. His imposing physique, however, immediately draws the envious gaze of senior Horatio Winston, who schemes to transform Ally into the campus laughingstock. Ally's world soon brightens with the captivating presence of Angela Boothby, Horatio’s current affection, prompting Ally to relentlessly seek details about her from his perpetually exasperated roommate, Shorty Buzelle. The plot thickens at a college "pep" dance, where Horatio's machinations culminate in Ally being dressed in a humiliating ensemble, becoming the target of widespread mockery. Yet, spurred by Angela's unexpected defense, Ally unleashes a surprising display of pugilistic prowess, earning a modicum of respect. This unexpected turn catches the eye of football coach Pop Warren, who, despite Ally's promise, sees a potential gridiron hero. Ally hesitantly joins the team, quickly becoming the star of the initial game. A subsequent refusal to play, stemming from his earlier oath, threatens the team's prospects until Angela, understanding the larger stakes, personally intervenes with his guardians. Their timely arrival at the climactic game inspires Ally to re-enter the fray, ultimately securing victory for Baldwin.
