Summary
A provincial chrysalis—call him Elias Voss—bursts into the cosmopolitan blaze of post-war New York clutching nothing but a gold-plated smile and an unquenchable thirst for crests of status. He barters childhood comrades for stock tips, swaps the blushing pianist who once believed moonlight was invented for their waltzes for the perfumed patronage of a steel heiress, and rewrites his lineage in the ink of yellowing society pages. Each handshake is a forgery, each kiss a promissory note against eternity. Yet the city—an implacable mirror—returns every counterfeit coin: boardroom victories ring hollow, marble hallways echo with the laughter of the friend whose fiancée he stole, and the heiress, bored by his boasts, installs a new lover in the adjoining smoking room. One winter dawn, bankrupt of allies and deluged by creditors who once toasted his cunning, Elias staggers onto an unfinished bridge, sees his reflection trembling in the iron-dark river, and for the first time confronts the abyss between the man he impersonated and the nothing he safeguarded inside. The epiphany is not redemption—it is the vertiginous recognition that the ladder he kicked away was always propped against air.
