Summary
A sun-scorched stranger, pockets as empty as the horizon, limps into a half-ghost frontier town clutching glittering rocks that might be salvation or fool’s gold; the assayer’s loupe reveals not just metal but a cartography of deceit—survey lines forged, mortgages forged heavier, a widow and her child on the lip of eviction. In the flicker of a kerosene lamp the drifter learns that beneath their humble floorboards lies a vein richer than sin, staked in secret by the same velvet-gloved realtor who smiles while signing their ruin. One dawn, shotgun in hand, he becomes the hinge on which their fate turns: a one-man tribunal against bribery, barbed wire, and the quiet terrorism of paperwork. By the final reel, the bogus deed is ashes, the widow’s hand is steady on a brand-new pickaxe, and the drifter, still broke, rides toward the vanishing point richer in myth than any assay could measure.
