Summary
Naive scribe Cuthbert Trotman enters the glittering orbit of affluent bon vivant Harry Travistock, who initiates him into metropolitan decadence with paternalistic flair. Amidst jazz-age soirées and speakeasy escapades, an unforeseen triangulation emerges: Travistock's sophisticated paramour Anita, initially amused by the protégé's bucolic innocence, finds herself magnetized by his unvarnished authenticity. As Trotman's literary voice matures through urban disillusionment, Anita's calculated flirtations evolve into genuine ardor, threatening the foundation of her gilded cage. The trio navigates shifting allegiances in a silent ballet of stolen glances and velvet betrayals, culminating not in explosive confrontation but in the quiet erosion of social artifice.
