The Gown of Destiny
Summary
In a poignant testament to the unexpected wellsprings of patriotic fervor, 'The Gown of Destiny' unfurls the tale of Andre Leriche, a diminutive French couturier whose fervent desire to serve his nation in the Great War is tragically thwarted by his physical stature. Undeterred, Leriche channels his unspent zeal into an audacious sartorial vision: a gown imbued with the spirit of France itself, designed to inspire and uplift. This singular garment, a veritable talisman, embarks on a remarkable odyssey. First, it finds its way into the life of Mrs. Mortimer Reyton, a woman adrift in the quiet desolation of a fading marriage. The gown's transformative power is immediate and profound, reawakening her husband's affections and, in a grand gesture of rekindled devotion and national pride, inspiring him to procure three ambulances for the war effort. Its journey continues as Mrs. Reyton dispatches it to her cousin, Natalie, where its allure captivates the Englishman Neil Cunningham. Smitten by Natalie and stirred by the gown's inherent magnetism, Cunningham forsakes his civilian life, returning to England to enlist. On the battle-scarred fields of France, Neil emerges as a valiant hero, culminating his saga of courage by dramatically rescuing Andre's own father, the town's venerable mayor, from the clutches of certain death during a fierce assault on a German stronghold. Thus, through the improbable agency of a dress, Andre Leriche's profound dream of contributing to his country's salvation is not merely realized, but woven into the very fabric of wartime heroism and personal redemption.
Synopsis
Rejected by the army because of his petite size, French dress designer Andre Leriche conceives the idea of designing a gown that will aid his country. His employer, Madame Felice, sells the gown to Mrs. Mortimer Reyton, a middle-aged woman who is gradually losing the love of her husband. The gown so transforms her that, in honor of their wedding anniversary, Reyton buys three ambulances for France. Mrs. Reyton then sends the gown to her cousin Natalie. The garment so inspires Englishman Neil Cunningham that, to win Natalie's love, he returns home to enlist. In France, Neil proves himself a hero and, while leading an attack on a German stronghold, saves Andre's father, the mayor of the town, from death. Thus, the gown made a reality of Andre's dream to serve his country.
