Summary
A poignant exploration of the Southern diaspora and the fragility of aristocratic vestiges, The Intrusion of Isabel chronicles the tragic descent of the Trevor family. Following the ignominious bankruptcy and subsequent demise of their patriarch, Isabel and Bert Trevor are uprooted from their ancestral soil, thrust into the unforgiving, concrete labyrinth of New York City. The narrative pivots on a desperate mendacity; Bert, failing to secure status, accepts a clandestine role as a valet to the affluent Jack Craig, yet masks his servitude by presenting himself to Isabel as Craig’s business associate. This web of deception entangles further when Bert, in a moment of moral collapse fueled by Craig’s intoxication, absconds with a roll of currency to Montana. Left in the wake of his disappearance, Isabel and her faithful Mammy inadvertently occupy Craig's residence under the illusion of shared ownership. What follows is a sophisticated comedy of manners and errors, where Craig’s paternalistic benevolence evolves into romantic fervor, contested by the snobbery of his kin and the predatory machinations of Lois Randall—a professional matrimonial swindler. The film culminates in a rigorous exposure of social performance, where the return of the prodigal Bert facilitates the unmasking of the 'Marrying Mary' syndicate and the restoration of the Trevor honor through a union of genuine affection.
Synopsis
Forced to sell their family's Southern home when their father dies bankrupt, Isabel and Bert Trevor come to New York. After many disappointments, Bert finally finds work as a valet to wealthy young Jack Craig, though he tells Isabel he is Craig's partner. One night while Craig is drunk, Bert discovers a roll of bills in his pocket and takes the money. Fearing arrest, Bert goes to Montana, where he secures a good job. Not knowing where Bert went, Isabel and Mammy move into what they think is Bert's half of Craig's house. Craig kindheartedly allows them to remain, and falls in love with Isabel although his sister disapproves and an adventuress, Lois Randall, claims he signed a marriage license during a wild wine party. When Bert returns, he sees Randall exposed by Craig's brother-in-law, a prosecuting attorney, as "Marrying Mary," purveyor of similar previous matrimonial schemes. Craig discreetly accepts Bert's apologies and repayment, then marries Isabel.
