A windswept ribbon of heather and secrecy unspools across the Galloway moors, where a prim cleric’s starched collar conceals the smoldering embers of a runaway marriage. She bears no letter of introduction—only a song half-remembered from cradle, a birthmark shaped like a thistle, and the unspoken dare that she might be the living syllable of a sin the village has rehearsed for twenty years in hushed kirk tones. The Reverend Ewan McClure, pillar of fire-and-brimstone, recognizes the cadence of her pulse as the same off-beat arrhythmia that once drummed beneath his own ribs when he fled the kirk with a tinkler’s daughter. In a candle-lit vestry thick with mothballs and moral vertigo, Morag lifts the sunbonnet: the lilac fabric falls away like a theatrical curtain, revealing not hair but heritage.
