Summary
In Edward Sloman’s 1918 narrative tapestry, Norah McDonald orchestrates a delightful yet profound subversion of social decorum. Driven by an uncompromising devotion to her canine companion, she navigates the stratified confines of a Pullman coach through a daring masquerade, swaddling her Pekinese in infant’s attire to bypass restrictive transit regulations. This whimsical subterfuge ensnares the attention of Paul Howell, a titan of industry whose philanthropic endeavors are governed by the cold, sterile logic of efficiency. Misinterpreting Norah’s unwed status and her 'infant' as signs of moral abandonment, Howell extends a hand of institutionalized benevolence, inviting her into the clockwork machinery of his charity organization. What follows is a sophisticated ideological duel; Norah, repulsed by the dehumanizing red tape of Howell’s bureaucratic altruism, secedes to establish a rival mission rooted in visceral empathy and spontaneous generosity. Her subsequent triumph—and the concomitant collapse of Howell’s rigid systems—serves as a poignant indictment of the era's obsession with scientific management over human connection, culminating in a comedic revelation that dissolves the barriers between duty and affection.
Synopsis
Loath to leave her pet dog in the baggage car, the wealthy Norah McDonald dresses the animal in baby clothes and carries him into the Pullman coach. There she meets millionaire philanthropist Paul Howell, who remarks that she seems rather young to be married. When Norah responds that she is unwed, Paul assumes that she has been betrayed and sympathetically offers her a position in his charity organization. Attracted to Paul, Norah accepts the job, but she disapproves of his bureaucratic methods and soon establishes a rival organization based less on efficiency than on charity. Norah's success and a few glaring failures of his own finally convince Paul that red tape and philanthropy don't mix, and after he learns that her "baby" is a Pekinese, the two become engaged.
