Summary
The twin sisters, Rosetta and Lola Gelardi, inhabit a sun‑lit Sicilian hamlet where the clatter of their father’s scholarly pursuits blends with the simple joys of village life. A violent quake shatters that fragile tableau, leaving the elder brother and the younger sisters bereft of home and hope. Escaping the rubble, they cross the Atlantic, settling in New York where Rosetta, with her unassuming grace, secures a position as a stenographer for the celebrated author Aubrey Hapgood. In the glittering, yet impersonal, streets of the city, Rosetta’s quiet dignity draws Aubrey’s attention, and the pair become the center of a social whirl that also attracts Mildred Sanders, a woman whose own ambitions threaten to eclipse the tender romance. Amid flirtations, jealous intrigues, and a promise of marriage, Rosetta’s world unravels when she learns of Aubrey’s engagement to Mildred. The ensuing despair culminates in a tragic act of self‑immolation, only for the narrative to dissolve into a dream sequence where the lines between reality and illusion blur, leaving the audience to ponder the fragile boundary that separates the heart’s yearning from the harshness of the world.
Synopsis
Twin sisters Rosetta and Lola Gelardi live happily with their aging father, Professor Gelardi, until their Sicilian village is destroyed by an earthquake. Unable to find Lola, the professor and Rosetta move to New York, where she obtains employment as a stenographer to author Aubrey Hapgood. Rosetta captivates Aubrey and his friends, but Mildred Sanders, who had hoped to win Aubrey for herself, tries to ruin Rosetta's reputation. On a drive with Aubrey, Rosetta relates her life story, whereupon Aubrey, claiming he loves her, takes her to an inn. Although he promises to marry her, she later reads of his engagement to Mildred. Rosetta shoots herself, after which Lola appears to avenge her death by causing the ruin of Aubrey's sister. Aubrey fires on Lola, but Rosetta awakens in his car and realizes that it was all a dream. While the chauffeur repairs the car, she and Aubrey walk into town to find a preacher.
