Summary
In an audacious act of calculated retribution, a sophisticated young woman, whose considerable social standing is matched only by her keen intellect, embarks on an elaborate scheme to dismantle the entrenched misogyny of a prominent young author. This author, a self-proclaimed misanthrope with particularly antiquated and offensive notions regarding the female sex, has retreated to the austere solitude of the mountains. His chosen hermitage serves as a crucible for his latest literary endeavor: a treatise on the ‘primitive woman,’ a concept he clearly views with disdain. Upon discovering his isolated sanctuary, and privy to his staunch vow that no woman shall ever defile his threshold, our resourceful protagonist devises a theatrical coup. She discreetly infiltrates the mountain community, adopting the guise of a wild, untamed girl of the hills, taking refuge with a local woman. Orchestrating a seemingly accidental tumble down an embankment, she ensures her 'distress' places her directly in the path of her unwitting target. The author, compelled by a nascent chivalry, rescues her, carrying her to his cabin where she feigns incapacitation, necessitating an extended stay. With the mountain woman summoned to lend an air of legitimacy, the two remain ensconced in his remote dwelling for several days. The intricate charade culminates with the inevitable arrival of her own concerned retinue, at which point the elaborate ruse is unveiled, revealing not only the woman's cunning but also the complete capitulation of the erstwhile woman-hater, now utterly captivated by the very charms he once so vehemently scorned.
Synopsis
A young woman of wealth revenges herself on a young author whose peculiar ideas about women have led him to act and speak in an insulting manner. This young man isolates himself in the mountains for the purpose of writing a story on the primitive woman, where he is discovered by his friends, to whom he vows that no woman shall cross his threshold. The mischievous young woman of the story, determined to place him at her feet, goes secretly to the home of a mountain woman with whom she lives in the guise of a wild girl of the hills. Purposely sliding over an embankment where she knows she will fall in his path, she is rewarded by having him pick her up and carry her to his cabin, where she pretends to be too much injured to be moved that day. The mountain woman is sent for and the two remain in the cabin of the author for several days. Finally she is discovered by her people, when it also comes to light that the woman-hating author has fallen to the charms of his pretty visitor.
