The Scarlet Road

Puritan-bred Mabel Halloway, her starched collar a scarlet flag against Greenwich Village’s smoky cafés, becomes the contested prize of two Manhattan predators: John Rand, a married editor whose ink-stained fingers tremble with unwritten divorces, and Raymond La Farge, a satyr in a silk vest who peddles futures while trafficking futures. When her feckless brother Dick gambles away stolen thousands on the ticker’s electric rosary, Mabel barters her virtue for a forged redemption: she weds Raymond so that his worthless paper can resurrect John’s hollowed name. The marriage curdles into a gilded cage; Dick’s new chorine lover Tiny spills that she is Raymond’s long-abandoned wife, turning every bedroom whisper into bigamy’s echo. Cornered, Raymond confesses the check was a ghost and lunges at Mabel; in the clawing tangle she becomes both avenger and witness as he plummets through the casement, a black silhouette swallowed by neon night. Widowhood arrives like dawn after an eclipse, and John—his own spouse newly cold—offers Mabel a hand still trembling with ink and absolution.
