Summary
In a tangled web of love, deceit, and mysticism, Barry Craven's life is turned upside down when he encounters his former sweetheart, Gillian Locke, in India, where her father is on a visit. The rekindling of their romance sets off a chain of events, commencing with the tragic demise of Craven's native wife, Lolaire, who takes her own life in a fit of jealousy. This fateful incident liberates Craven, enabling him to return to England and marry Gillian. However, their happiness is short-lived, as Craven's Indian servant, Kunwar Singh, casts a spell on him, compelling him to abandon Gillian and venture into the Algerian desert. There, he joins his old university friend, Said, the son of an Algerian sheik. Gillian's pursuit of Craven leads to the demise of the servant and the breaking of the spell, aptly referred to as 'The Shadow of the East.'
