Biography
A winter baby, Bertram Grassby drew his first breath in Lincolnshire on 23 December 1880 and grew into the kind of quietly magnetic presence that silent-era cameras loved. Between 1919 and 1927 he slipped into skins as varied as the cunning jewel thief in *The Lone Wolf’s Daughter*, the frantic lawyer racing *The Midnight Express*, and the tortured lover of *When a Man Loves*, while also turning his hand to scripts behind the scenes. Off-screen, he shared his life with Gerard Alexander; together they traded foggy English mornings for the desert air of Scottsdale, Arizona, where Grassby’s final curtain fell on 7 December 1953.
