Summary
A velvet-gloved parable of class voyeurism unfurls when an alabaster-skinned American plutocrat, ears honed to the trembling wish of a threadbare London journalist, clandestinely bankrolls an Alpine pilgrimage disguised as a press assignment. What begins as a whispered dream in a fog-thick Fleet Street tavern mutates into a crystalline labyrinth of chandeliers, glacier-blue ballrooms and serrated love triangles once the snow starts falling. The penniless scribe, now swaddled in ermine by proxy, discovers that every gilded lift ride comes with invisible tariffs: a rivalrous baroness covets her sponsor’s wallet, a monocled hotelier polishes etiquette like brass knuckles, and the very mountains seem to echo gossip across their marble corridors. Secrets avalanche—bank-transfer ledgers, forged letters of credit, midnight sleigh chases—until identity itself becomes as unstable as the thawing permafrost beneath the Grand Hôtel des Fées. When the last cable car groans down the slope, the only passport stamped is the human heart, bruised yet incandescent.
