Summary
In the restless summer of a coastal New England town, the lives of two disparate youths intersect beneath the looming threat of an Atlantic storm. Clara Horton portrays Gale Whitmore, a headstrong orphan who has inherited her late mother's modest boardinghouse, determined to keep it afloat despite the town’s dwindling tourism. Kit Guard plays Hurricane ‘Hank’ McAllister, a brash itinerant boxer whose reputation for reckless brawls precedes him, yet whose tender heart remains concealed beneath a veneer of bravado. When a sudden gale forces the town’s ferry to dock early, Hank arrives in a drunken stupor, colliding with Gale’s orderly world. Their clash evolves into a reluctant partnership as the town’s mayor (George O'Hara) commissions a daring rescue operation to save a stranded lighthouse keeper’s family before the oncoming tempest reaches full fury. Al Cooke provides comic relief as the bumbling deputy, while Norman Selby, a real‑life former heavyweight champion, appears as the grizzled sea‑captain who guides the rescue. Written by Beatrice Van, H.C. Witwer, Malcolm St. Clair, and Darryl F. Zanuck, the screenplay weaves themes of redemption, class tension, and nature’s indifferent power. The climax erupts as the gale transforms into a full‑blown hurricane, forcing Gale and Hank to confront their inner demons amidst crashing waves, shattered windows, and the desperate cries of those trapped in the lighthouse. In the aftermath, the storm’s devastation yields an unexpected renewal: the boardinghouse is rebuilt, the lighthouse stands resilient, and Gale and Hank, having weathered both literal and figurative tempests, find a tentative, hopeful bond.
