Summary
David Compton, a young Englishman stationed on the Western Front, deserts the comforts of his Parisian lover, Louise Boucher, a luminous dancer at the Moulin Rouge, to enlist in the Great War. The conflict shatters his memory, erasing the tender moments he once shared with Louise. Upon returning to civilian life, a disoriented David reconstructs his identity in London, eventually marrying a respectable Englishwoman and establishing a modest domestic routine. Meanwhile, Louise, believing David perished, gives birth to their child and ascends the Parisian stage under the luminous moniker Deloryse, her fame eclipsing the shadows of loss. As her health wanes, the specter of mortality looms, and she accepts a final, grueling engagement at a private soirée. In the audience, a bewildered David experiences a sudden flood of recollections, the war's amnesia dissolving in the glow of the footlights. Confronted with the revelation that his former lover now bears a child and is married to another, Louise relinquishes her son into the care of David's new wife, a gesture steeped in tragic generosity. The night culminates in Louise's collapse, her body succumbing to exhaustion and a heartbroken soul, sealing a narrative of love, loss, and the inexorable passage of time.
