Summary
In the chiaroscuro of an era when celluloid was still discovering its own pulse, Zongar sculpts itself as a kinetic bas-relief of sweat, marble, and desire. A track-star who carves sinew from both stone and flesh, Zongar’s heart beats in sync with Helen Thorpe—an amazonian jumper whose stride equals his own—until Richard Sutton, a velvet-gloved predator in Oxford spats, wedges his monogrammed dagger between them. Into this fracture slithers Wanda Vaughan, a pantherine adventuress dripping with mendacious diamonds, whispering to Helen that she already wears Zongar’s ring. The lovers fracture; Helen flees into Sutton’s gilded cage. Yet art becomes both weapon and witness: Zongar coaxes his lost muse to model for his obsessive pieta, chiseling her absences into presence. Sutton answers by slaughtering the sculptor’s father and kidnapping the unfinished statue-in-flesh from the atelier. What follows is a vertiginous triptych—speedboat, biplane, cliff-edge—a collision of mediums as if cinema itself were trying to outrun sculpture. When the aircraft stoops like a raptor, Zongar snatches Helen mid-air, Sutton’s Duesenberg pirouettes into the abyss, and Wanda’s lacquered grin is finally manacled. Marble dust settles; hearts resume their sprint.
Synopsis
Zongar, a dedicated athlete and sculptor, loves fellow athlete Helen Thorpe, and although she also loves him, the unscrupulous Richard Sutton wants Helen for himself, and to that end, plots to separate the two. To make things worse, adventuress Wanda Vaughan, who hopes to win Zongar, tells Helen that she is engaged to the athlete, whereupon Helen angrily leaves Zongar to become Richard's fiancée. Through Zongar's persistent attentions to Helen, however, he persuades her to pose for his masterpiece. The evil Richard kills Zongar's father and then abducts Helen from Zongar's studio. Undaunted, Zongar pursues them in a boat and later an airplane, and when the pilot dives at Richard's car, Zongar grabs Helen and pulls her to safety. Richard plunges over a cliff and Wanda is arrested, leaving the two athletes free to continue their romance in peace.
