6.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. A Boy and His Dog remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch A Boy and His Dog? If you have six minutes to spare and a high tolerance for vintage, jittery animation that feels like a fever dream, then sure. Kids might find the giant dog thing a bit much, and honestly, if you’re looking for something cozy, keep walking.
The whole premise is pretty simple. A kid is a total jerk to his pup. He kicks it, yells at it, just general bully behavior. Then he falls asleep, and the movie decides to take a hard left turn into the surreal. The dog grows to the size of a house. It’s genuinely jarring.
There’s this one sequence where the scale shifts so abruptly it feels like the animators just gave up on perspective entirely. The dog is suddenly looming over the kid like a furry Godzilla. It’s not smooth, but it’s got *character*.
Watching this made me think about The Adventurer. Both films have that frantic, silent-era energy where the movement feels like it’s being held together by duct tape and sheer willpower. It’s a bit messy, but that’s the fun of it.
The way the dog decides to get revenge is played for laughs, but there’s a weird undertone to it. Like, is this supposed to be a lesson? Because the dog definitely goes overboard. 🐕
It’s not trying to be Piccadilly or some high-art masterpiece. It’s just a weird snippet of history that someone thought was a good idea to put on film. And you know what? It works because it’s so damn strange.
I’m still not entirely sure why the kid had to be that mean in the first place. The script doesn’t waste time on motivation, that’s for sure. It just gets right to the giant dog part.
If you’re a completionist for early animation, you’ve probably already seen it. If you’re just someone who likes weird stuff, it’s worth a look. Just don’t go in expecting a Pixar-level emotional journey. It’s more like a weird dream you have after eating too much cheese before bed. 🧀
