6.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Acht Mädels im Boot remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for pre-war German cinema that actually feels human rather than just like a museum exhibit, then yes. It's for people who like character-driven stuff and don't mind a slower, more deliberate pace. If you need explosions or big, loud emotional outbursts every ten minutes, you will probably be bored out of your mind.
There is something inherently claustrophobic about a rowing team in a movie. You have eight people who are literally forced to move as one unit. The film leans into this visual of perfect coordination right before things start to fall apart for Christa.
The way the girls treat her at the beginning—it’s not all sunshine and giggles. There is this frantic, slightly forced energy to their friendship. It feels like they are all holding their breath just to keep the boat moving straight.
I couldn't help but notice the way the camera lingers on the rowing gear. The oars, the wood of the boat, the way they grip the handles—it feels more real than the actual dialogue sometimes. It makes you feel the physical toll of the sport.
When Christa starts acting weird, the movie doesn't make a big show of it. She just sort of fades into the background of her own life. It’s subtle, which makes the eventual collapse feel earned, not just tacked on for drama.
I was reminded a bit of the tension in Woman to Woman, where the stakes are mostly kept behind closed doors. The fear here isn't just about the pregnancy; it's about the shame of disappointing the group. That’s a heavy weight for a young person to carry.
The ending feels a bit abrupt. It just kind of stops, like the movie ran out of breath. Honestly, I didn't mind that. Real life rarely ties everything up in a neat little bow anyway.
The pacing is a bit uneven, sure. But there’s a quiet intensity to it that I found myself sticking with, even when the dialogue got a bit too stiff for my liking. It's a strange little film, but it stuck with me for a few days after. Sometimes, a movie doesn't need to be perfect to be worth watching. 🚣♀️
