6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Boule de gomme remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a morbid curiosity about old-school French cinema or if you want to see a movie handle child discipline in a way that would get a production shut down today. If you’re looking for a heartwarming story about a young talent finding his light, keep looking. If you want a strange, slightly uncomfortable historical oddity, you’re in the right place.
The whole premise hinges on this kid, Boule de Gomme, being a total nightmare on set. He’s supposed to be crying or laughing on cue, but he’s just… off. He’s out of sync with everything the director wants. It feels like watching a car crash in slow motion, except the car is a toddler being difficult.
The movie does a decent job of showing just how miserable a film set can get when the lead is checked out. The director is doing that classic frantic pacing back and forth, rubbing his temples like he’s trying to scrub away a migraine. You can practically smell the stale coffee and cigarette smoke in the room. It feels raw, in a weirdly dusty way.
Then there’s the grip. He’s not a fancy guy. He’s just there to move gear, but he decides he’s had enough of the kid’s attitude. The solution? A good old-fashioned beating. Yeah, it’s wild.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in McFadden's Flats or the chaotic tone shifts you see in Lost Money. It’s not smooth. It’s not polished. It’s just kind of happening to you while you watch.
The most bizarre part? The grip gets a promotion. He basically solves a human resources disaster with violence and gets a corner office for his troubles. It’s such a cynical, weirdly funny note to end on. You walk away wondering what the writers were thinking.
It’s not a masterpiece, and I don’t think it’s trying to be. It’s just a weird little window into a time when movies felt a lot more impulsive. Don’t overthink it, or you’ll lose your mind trying to justify the grip’s promotion path. Just watch the kid get confused and move on. 🎥
